"Are you ready to go fast?! Yes!" - said one toddler to another.

I don't think I could have been more proud in that moment when a stranger (toddler) asked Roman that simple question, and Roman answered him.

Roman inside a mock cockpit at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

I couldn't believe my ears...

As Roman was sitting inside the car with the little boy, I held my breath. I so desperately wanted him to interact with other kids for so long, but I wasn't sure how or if he really would.

But, the moment he responded, I made eye contact with my husband standing nearby with my youngest son. We smiled proudly at one another, and at least for me, we each had a small tear well up in our eyes.

We've been working so hard to socialize Roman. Taking him to the store with us, the park ad the museum. And to hear him for the first time, reply to a question from a peer, just made my entire week.

The Importance of Socialization

Every single interaction your child has, no matter how big or how small, helps them learn language skills, cope with emotions, and work within social norms. - Martin-Pitt Partnership for Children

I knew socialization was crucial in early development, but now I'm realizing just how much of a difference it's making in my son's life. The following quote makes me realize this, and gives me hope for my son's future.

As your child grows, they will begin to learn how to identify their thoughts and emotions. They will also recognize the feelings of others around them, being able to decipher whether a person is happy or sad. They will be learning how to manage stress, resolve conflict, and fit in by communicating with others in their surroundings. - Martin-Pitt Partnership for Children
